Aetna extends bundled cancer prior authorization to all tumor types in Medicaid
Aetna said it has extended its bundled prior-authorization program to cover all cancer types for eligible Medicaid members in eight states (Oklahoma, Illinois, Maryland, New Jersey, Virginia, Florida, Kentucky and West Virginia), effective September 1. The bundle combines medical oncology (chemotherapy, immunotherapy) and radiation oncology with associated imaging like MRI or CT into a single authorization request submitted through the Eviti portal, instead of the roughly four separate requests providers previously filed per patient. Aetna plans to expand the bundled approach to its Medicare and commercial plans in the first half of 2027.
Why it's notable: Nearly a quarter of eligible Medicaid oncology patients are already getting bundled approvals under the program, and extending it to Medicare and commercial plans in 2027 would cut a documented source of delay and paperwork for oncology practices nationwide.
