athenahealth lets patients connect their health records to Anthropic's Claude

On Nov. 2, athenahealth launched athenaPatient MCP, a Model Context Protocol server that lets patients link their athenahealth records to Claude. It is available to Claude Pro and Max subscribers in the US. Patients sign in with their patient portal credentials, choose which data to share (such as labs, medications, allergies, immunizations and encounter summaries) and can revoke access at any time. The company says it limits access to AI assistants that do not train on patient data, and that Claude is the first integration, with other AI models planned.

Why it's notable: A major ambulatory EHR vendor is giving patients a sanctioned way to feed their official records to a consumer AI assistant. Clinics will likely see patients arriving with AI-assisted questions about their charts.
